Peter Grewar planted his first 14 hectares of potatoes in 1973 and the family have continued to increase their potato operations year by year with 645 hectares of potatoes planted for the 2011 season.

Planting takes place between early April and mid-May with weeds being killed off in late May before the plant emerges. Intensive Blight protection commences around June to ensure the crop is not lost to the disease. The plants are burnt off in September then either lifted straight away or left it the ground for a month to allow the skin to harden so they can be stored successfully without bruising or skin damage.

Up to 10 different varieties are grown each season for their different characteristics to meet the demands of the retail and food processing markets. Rooster is one such variety and is marketed by Albert Bartlett and Sons Ltd for it's versatility and taste.
